The U.S. opioid epidemic has left no state untouched, but has ravaged some more than others.
The opioid crisis continues to plague the U.S., driving drug overdose deaths to a record high in 2017 and portending a dire new normal for years to come.More
than 176,600 Americans died from an opioid-related overdose between
2013 and 2017, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control
and Prevention. About a quarter of those deaths – 47,600 – occurred in
2017 alone. Across the country, the opioid death rate was 11.1
deaths per 100,000 people from 2013 to 2017, with the peak annual rate
of 14.9 occurring in 2017 .The
crisis has left no U.S. state untouched, but has ravaged some
communities more than others. In the slides that follow, see which 10
states had the highest five-year death rates from opioid-involved
overdoses from 2013 to 2017, as well as which counties in those states
were hit the hardest.
